Updates from the Shepherdstown Tree Commission

April 14, 2025

Spring is in full swing, and the Shepherdstown Tree Commission has several exciting updates to share.

We’ll be planting new trees throughout town starting soon, with a focus on filling the empty tree wells along German Street between King and Princess. The variety of trees were carefully selected for their beauty and ability to thrive in the more challenging conditions of a street-side environment—where water is limited and space can be tight. We prioritized non-invasive root systems, appropriate height, and overall hardiness.

The new plantings will include Okami Cherry, Hophornbeam, Dogwood, Fringetree, Black Gum, and a larger Jefferson Elm, which will be placed on the west end of German Street. A mix of species makes our canopy stronger and more resilient to pests and disease.

In addition to new plantings, we recently completed a large pruning effort along German and Duke Streets. Elsewhere in town, we responded to a number of resident pruning requests to address specific concerns and help maintain tree health and safety.

Another important project underway is the treatment of mature ash trees at Cullison Park to protect them from emerald ash borer damage. These trees are a key part of the park’s canopy, and we’re taking steps now to preserve them for future generations.

With Earth Day approaching, this is a perfect time to reflect on the importance of trees in our community. As a proud Tree City USA, Shepherdstown is committed to caring for and expanding our tree canopy. It’s hard to imagine our town without the shade, beauty, wildlife habitat, and ecological benefits our trees provide.

A sincere thank you to the members of the Tree Commission and to the arborists who have supported these efforts with their time, expertise, and dedication. This work wouldn’t be possible without you.

And thank you to the residents for supporting the care and stewardship of Shepherdstown’s trees—we’re looking forward to a lovely green season ahead!
