Please Take Precautions in the Coming Arctic Cold Snap!

The Weather Service is forecasting very cold temperatures for our region from Sunday evening, January 19 through at least Friday, January 24.   Please see the forecast for the details.

We encourage all residents to take precautions over this period to prevent frozen or burst pipes, which can be costly and disrupt water service.

What You Should Do:

  • Run a trickle of water: During freezing temperatures, allow a small, steady stream of cold water to flow from one or more faucets, especially those located along exterior walls. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
  • Open cabinets: If you have plumbing under sinks near exterior walls, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • Insulate pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in insulation or use heat tape to help protect them from the cold.
  • Keep your thermostat consistent: Maintain a steady temperature in your home, even at night, to help prevent freezing.

If you experience a water service issue or suspect a pipe has frozen, please contact the Shepherdstown Water Department immediately at 304-876-2394.

Please stay warm and safe in this frigid weather!
