MISSION
The Town's Planning and Zoning office strives to protect and promote health and safety through the professional administration and enforcement of building codes and related ordinances.

Individuals must obtain a permit from the town to build or remove structures - which include such things as building a house, shed, building extensions, and fences.

Much of the town is located in an historic district. If you live within the historic district, there are additional requirements on the materials to be used and a Certificate of Appropriateness that is issued by the Historic Landmarks Commission in advance of seeking a Building Permit.

In addition, the Town has adopted the International Property Maintenance Code which establishes minimum property maintenance standards for all buildings, structures and premises within the Corporation of Shepherdstown.

ASSOCIATED COMMITTEES
The Planning Commission and the Historic Landmarks Committee are important in the administration and interpretation of the Ordinances relating to building and enhancements in town. The Board of Zoning Appeals offers an opportunity for residents to file an appeal of decisions made by these committees.
